They Called Me On A Mission

So this is my last journal entry guys! As of Wednesday, October 13th, I will be gone to the Mission Training Center in Provo, Utah. A few weeks after that they are flying me down to Porto Alegre North Mission in Brasil!

I will be there for the standard 18 months that a woman serves a mission and will not have ANY way of updating or viewing my websites and normal e-mail. If you would like me to write to you and/or you write to me please send me an e-mail to fryillustration(at)gmail(dot)com. My parents will forward your addresses to me!

Thanks for being wonderful friends and visitors to me here on my blog! Hopefully I'll have some great tales to tell and drawings to post when I get back!

I Miss Everyone.

I never thought I'd say this.....but I miss college. All my friends are still around that area for the most part, and I loved being in a group environment while working on artwork, it was wonderful! I don't have those opportunities anymore. I work on my paintings and drawings and wonder if they're any good or not, or if they could be better. When I was at college people could give me a straight answer on that usually, they told me what I couldn't see.

I also miss all the crazy things we'd do, from pranking teachers to just hanging out and talking art while we were all drawing/painting in those vaulted ceiling, cold, messy art rooms. It was wonderfully friendly and motivating. I think that environment was really crucial for me. Painting now is still exciting, and I still enjoy it, along with drawing, (heaven help me if I ever get tired of drawing!), but its WAY more interesting when you're in a class of other artists. That last semester of BFA was great! I really miss everyone from that, and I'm sad that I wasn't at the BFA class the semester before, that I just met in the mornings with Huntsman, though it was cool to get one-on-one feed back and all.

Figure drawing is something that I miss alot too. Illustrative Figure drawing that last semester was a blast! I had so much fun with everyone there, getting the chance to practice drawing with different mediums, and being constantly influenced by what I saw other people drawing. It was wonderful! Now I don't have that in my life and I find life to be much more lonely and confining.

I paint. I paint alot. Everyday. I don't feel like I'm improving much though, or like there is alot of purpose to it. I do large paintings for the most part, and I've been getting really picky lately about the quality of them. Thats all fine and good, but I'm not producing alot of artwork at the moment. Plenty of drawings perhaps, but not finished, publishable or usuable, artwork. I need a new motivation I think, people that I can talk to face to face with again but are not beginners at the sametime. If they are then I'll feel kinda dragged down or like I'm the only one that understands what I'm doing....which isn't that great because I really don't know for the most part what I am doing.

I've thought about moving back to Rexburg before but I really don't want to get tied down there; lets face it, there aren't alot of opportunities in Rexburg and it seems like the people that stay there get stuck there. I love the people there, but I need to be able to get an art job thats going to take me places, or make life bareable. Rexburg has little chance of making that happen.

Well, sorry for the pitiful rant guys....I doubt anyone reads this stuff anyways, haha. I'll have more drawings and stuff soon. Its almost time for me to leave on my Mission to Brasil though, so don't expect much from me for a while. BUT PLEASE STAY IN CONTACT!!!! Yay for drawings! Some of these are a bit old, but I still wanted to post them since their pretty cool....or at least I think they are, hehe. The two bottom ones were drawn on larger pieces of paper while the others are smaller because they were in a tiny sketchbook.

Some more elf stuff. I do these little drawings during my lunch at work or just during some down time and get them printed on watercolor paper so I can quickly get some practice in with watercolors and with color in general. I think I need to clean up his hair a little bit and then can call it done.

I'm still working on it. I changed things up and am trying to just refine things now. I'll probably rework alot of this image, but I want to finish it and make it look nice. I think its a beautiful peaceful image and it reminds me of all the hikes with my dad in the moss covered woods of Oregon and Washington when I'd wake up in our tent to the first snow of the year. Its always so peaceful and exciting when that happens.

So this has a story behind it and the girl is floating. The guy's face looks kinda dirty. The image was too big for my scanner and of course the photo doesn't do it justice AT ALL. I'll take it in with a few other paintings to get it scanned on a better scanner later. Just trying my hand at watercolor painting again. Its been years! Okay, here goes!

A.) Obviously Jon Foster. Though I didn't know about him until just a few years back his art has made a huge inpact on me. His values especially. I love the colors that he uses but they're really hard for me to grasp and I feel myself getting frustrated and confused everytime I try to paint like him...but I cant help it, its just so cool looking! B.) Justin Sweet. I've looked through his paintings alot throughout the years but its finally starting to help me understand things I never knew about art before. Like how to make a man look manly instead of like a scrawny boy....I'm still learning.... http://www.justinsweet.com/

C.) Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. I have been looking through her art for YEARS now. Many many years. She always made me want to paint not just beautiful things, but lively people, ones that are always doing something rather then just being. http://www.shadowscapes.com/

D.) Alphonse Mucha. For very obvious reasons. If you don't know him then go do some research. Right now.

E.) I've watched Loish's artwork for a while. I remember back when she used to do alot more furries and I thought they were cute then, but her color schemes and understanding of value and designs has really blazed a trail and inspired me. Sometimes you don't have to completely fill up an image with things and people to make it interesting. She taught me that. http://loish.net/

F.) Impressionist painters. They didn't always influence me, but lately I find myself drawn to their style of art.

G.) Happy memories right here. I remember watching Tracy Butler when I first started art, back in 1999. I started off by trying to learn how to draw her anthro art, growing with the idea of characters like Fox and Dustin and Luna. When she started doing alot more watercolor painting I wanted to do it to. When she started drawing people I wanted to learn how as well. When Tracy drew comics I tried to draw them too. Shes always had a huge impact on me. Her art now, Lackadaisy, is great and all, but I'm stuck in the past with her characters of Ainessa and all those beautiful drawings. I learned how to make a drawing look beautiful and flow by watching studying her drawings. I cant get over them even now. http://www.foxprints.com/tracy/

H.) Kazuo Oga. He paints the backgrounds to most of Studio Ghibli's films. I love his colors, his textures, and the way he makes everything feel like its straight from your childhood memories. The places he paints feels like they exhist, and yet they are portrayed at their very best and most alluring.

I.) Julie Dillon is another one I've watched for forever. I love her colors and her scenes. Her images always tell such an amazing story. The harsh lines up against such smooth and soft backgrounds creates a perfect contrast that just draws you in. She paints things that you don't see everywhere; her images are very much so original and different from the majority, and I love them for it! http://www.jdillon.net

J.) Miyazaki. One of the greatest directors of animated films ever. A great artist and a great writer. Need I say more?

K.) Brian Froud. No matter how far from the realm of normal fantasy I might go I always feel the need to draw like him. Especially lately. Just to have that fluidity and playfulness in my images. His paintings are beautiful and make you believe the creatures within are real. If you ask me, hes a successful painter for being able to make fantasy feel like reality.

L.) Agasang. She made anime look beautiful to me. I'm not much of an anime person, but I couldn't help falling in love with her style and colors. She truely knows how to draw and paint! If you don't know who she is then here you go! http://www.agasang.org/

Well, there are WAY more people then that who have influenced me, I'm kind of a collector of artists in a way, but those are the ones that have helped influence me the most that I remember. If I could fit one more on there I would have to say Kyoht when she was doing most of her coyotes and desert art back in the old days. I used to eat werewolves and all that up like crazy!

I'm all done working on wedding photos so back to painting! This is as far as I've gotten on my sister's commission. I'm hoping to finish it by the end of the week and start get racing on my other commissions. Hopefully I'll be all caught up on everything soon!

This is something I'm working on right now. Its actually a much larger image with the girls body in there and trees/plants all around her too, but this is the part I'm working on at the moment.
I thought I might need to work on my painting/coloring skills a bit more in a traditional sense for a while rather than making things up and characterizing them. So yeah, this is practice for me. Hopefull I finish it, its kinda big.

Thanks all you people that commented! It was really helpful. So I did another one based off of some of the critiques and I think I might go with this one once I make a few value changes. Its smaller than the others right now so hopefully you can still pick up on some of the details I want to put in.

Cassie - I really liked your idea about putting more architectural elements into the arches so I'm going to do a bit more studying for them. I was thinking I'd make it kind of like a triumphal arch. Sound good?

Hannah - thanks for the help! I've messed with the image a bit more so things aren't all same-same. Hopefully it looks a bit better.

Preston - thanks for backing up the worms eye view, I wasn't 100% sold on it yet so its nice to hear what other's think. Do you think I need to press it more after seeing the new thumbnail?

Another idea. I think I'm going to go with this one, but a few questions have been bothering me. Should I change where the top doorways are? Should I get rid of them? Maybe I should do more lanters, or make them smaller, or maybe just get rid of them, I'm not sure right now. Changing their position might make it look better, or are they okay right now as long as I don't let them out shine the lower doorways? Still trying to figure this stuff out...

Designs for the Comic

So I'm just trying to think of the first page right now, the intro environment. Its an Elven city but I want it to be different. Yes they live in trees in the woods, but I was thinking maybe I could change things up a bit by adding some architectural features, like pillars carved into the trees and banners and various other stuff like that, but first things first, I need a basic design to start off with. I kinda like numbers 8 and 10 right now, as well as number 19. Perhaps if I do a combination of the two? I'll come up with some more ideas.

This is a larger thumbnail of #8/#10 because I wanted to check out a few more bits and pieces of it's design.

So I started working on a comic because I figured it would help me work on all that stuff I suck at! You know, environments, characters, story telling, value, color, art in general...yeah. So after hearing the comments below I've messed around with it a bit - remember that I'm just trying to figure out the color scheme, the drawing is not in its final stage and will change as well - and the colors have changed a little, the sky being less saturated and more green/blue rather than blue blue.

Heres the next poster coming along. I'm still trying to figure out the buildings below, but I'm not too worried about them being perfectly realistic. For color schemes I'm thinking a green/blue sky with the buildings being more of reds/rust colored and the characters are mostly warm browns, reds, and yellows. The clouds I think I'll figure out as I go. We'll see what happens with them.

Oh, and I'm going to fix the clouds...they're looking pretty horrible right now, or at least on the left they are.

And a random environment, getting close to being finished with it.

Ummm, yeah. I started this last year and have decided that I like it again and want to finish it. Its kinda christmasy because of the colors and stuff.
Just a random elf dude sitting there taking cover from the snow. I just wanted to do some pretty lighting and try my hand at some painting again. I'm not that great at painting so I want to try and improve through some random projects of my own here and there.

Estil Color Ideas

So I'm working on another character painting, this time of my character Estil. She is in the Same story with Kur and Dawmin, but she is a noble woman and I wanted to try and portray that.

I'm having a bit of difficulty figuring out what color scheme I want to go with though. She has really blong hair and I should probably throw a lot more accessories on her, but at the moment getting her pose down and a definate color scheme is more important. The lighting is coming from the viewers left.

Another Kur Update

I'm still working on Kur. I just haven't had a lot of motivation lately when it comes to painting. Faces and profiles are more interesting to me when it comes to painting, but I still want to do my characters. I really hate painting the rest of the body, its frustrating and boring to me.

But yeah, enough complaining, I'm still working away on this one, hopefully it will be finished by tomorrow...it isn't even that hard of a painting...I'm just lazy.

Okay so I haven't been uploading very much because I've been preoccupied and... I haven't really been wanting to pay much attention to artwork.

The boy character is Dawmin and the girl is Kur. Dawmin is a hand-to-hand combat sorta dude and Kur is a long range gunner that works with an underground gang of theives.

I know it isn't much, but this is the newest drawing I've got. One of my characters, Cithal, playing something like football I'm sure with his son. His poor boy probably went home crying about how "dad cheated! I never got to even TOUCH the ball!"

I also had a little fun messing around with simple coloring over my drawing. It isn't fabulous but oh well. You can tell I don't really like messing with feet....or ears for that matter.

A new doodle of my character Sarista that I thought of and drew up today. She looks pretty cool, but needs some sort of a boreder and maybe a bit of a background, we'll see...Perhaps some color too.

Just a color scheme idea for my drawing, I have to rescan the drawing so I have a higher resolution scan, then do all the coloring all over again. I would really like to do it, but we'll see if I have the patience for it.

I'm actually thinking of making the dude above into a full on illustration; he'd be hanging in the air just above the ground and some punk kid would be standing in front of him looking like hes in control or something. It would be cool, lots of grey blues and mist behind them with the moon showing through a little.

Sorry I haven't been uploading a lot of artwork lately. I've been kinda bogged down with work and other crap. There is one large image that I would really like to oil paint right now but unfortunately my art studio in the garage is waste deep in crap. I plan on cleaning it out tomorrow.
The only alternative I've been left with is to either paint digitally, which for some reason I've been not wanting to do much of, or to draw. So I've been drawing...and occasionally watercolor painting.
But yeah, hope you enjoy!

I've had this slight obsession with Naiads(Water Nymphs) lately so I've been drawing them and messing around with my own designs for them. They're pretty cruel to people but are eternally happy and playful.

Sarista Still in progress

So I have some other drawings that I would like to post but my professor still has them at the moment. I'll upload them as soon as I get a chance.
Until then, I'm still working on my portrait of Sarista...I know, its been taking me forever but the image is giving me a hard time. Her hair is still slightly screwy after I've tried to fix it about four times now, and the background still needs some help, but I'm having issues.
If anyone has any ideas on how I could fix this up a little bit better let me know, k?

Manual & Sarista

Okay So I've been doing some new artwork for school, not much yet but I should be having a few pictures to post each week.
This first on is of my character Manual Starwind. I'm in the process of coloring it in Photoshop CS2 at the moment and it should be finished by Tuesday along with another character portrait.
I like how this is coming out so far. Hopefully my professors thing the same thing.

This other one is Manual Starwind's wife, Sarista. I haven't begin to coloring her yet, but hopefully she'll be done by Tuesday as well.

Here's the update for my naiad dood Ghelorus (Ghel).
I like how this actually came out. I've never been very good at backgrounds so I usually don't even try to do them anymore...I know, I'm bad. I should be practicing them more often. I'll get there soon!
He's supposed to look like he is leaning over the edge of something. And I never did do the drawing for his other hand so I left it out 'cus I hate painting hands.
This was done on Photoshop CS2 with a Wacom pen.

And actually, with that in mind I thought I'd upload another image that I'm not finished with yet. I probably wont ever finish it because I tried to do a background and it didn't work out so well. But I like the girl's face.

Yeah, I've been drawing lately...and painting, but not finishing anything.
Bad me...

Well, this first drawing is one for my friend Mishi who you can check out Here.
Its two of her characters and I haven't really finished the picture yet...and once again I've been bad and haven't been drawing from any referance. I'll probably hear an ear full from my art advisor at school about referance again this year. He wont be too happy with me.

This one is something I'm still working on. I'm hoping to finish it soon...or at least the sketch soon and then I want to paint it on the computer. Its just a little something for the up and coming Winter. I have a thing for snow.

And the last one is another character sketch of one of my new favorite character's of mine. His name is Ghel or Ghelorus and hes a water nymph/naiad. I started a painting of him that you can see below this post.

I saw another artist doing these cool little speed paintings; he would knock out these beautiful images within two or three hours and they were AWESOME! So I decided to try my hand at it. This one was done in about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

I'm Still Alive

Don't worry, I'm still here, I'm just really really...really lazy and haven't been keeping up with this account of mine. But i think I've figured out a purpose for it: I have a few other art sites that I like putting up my portfolio pieces on and their are links to those on this blog, but I think I just want to put my sketchs and ideas on here, no finished pieces...cause I pretty much do tons of sketchs but hardly any finished pieces...
I know.
I'm bad.
Oh well.
So some of the new pieces that I'm going to be posting arn't all that magnificent, but at least it's something. Mostly character sketchs and what-not. I'll describe them as I go I guess.

So heres the first one, I was just reading through my friend's stories and started drawing some of her characters. The first dood thats all scowlly to the left is Wyman. The boy at the bottom would be Westly and the woman in the top right is Westly's older sister, Lauranda. I hope my friend, Mishi, enjoys these. There will probably be more, especially if they influence her to continue writing her book. We'll see how it goes...

This is some more of my friend, Mishi's characters; the girl who just tore her dress is the main character, Aubrey, and the two people in the background, starting with the man on the left, are Wyman and a stable boy...anime style. Its a scene from the book where Aubrey, intentionally, tears her dress while getting off of her horse. Yeah. Thats pretty much it.

Heres a random character that I created to go to one of my own stories. He's a Dire-Were, meaning like a werewolf but a more ancient version that is a lot larger and tougher built.
The dude's name is Zash....he kicks butt...so there.

Well, I did the drawing for this piece before the word came out, but felt like it fit well enough because the girl is hiding her face. I know theres some screwy stuff about it, but I really enjoyed painting it, and I also enjoyed being able to put one of my sketchs to use instead of drawing it then throwing it aside like I usually do. The dude in the picture originally had some cool red horns but I didn't want to make him look satanic or anything...that would definately be throwing across the wrong idea. Hopefully you all enjoy this one! I know I did.

A Study

We're doing this thing with being able to change the colors and all of the lines in our images on photoshop, so I did a study before going into the normal Illustration Friday stuff. I like this method a lot, but it might not get used to often by me. I'm starting to get less into line work and more into just plain painting. But I do like it, it looks cool and it is fun to do.
Well, it's kinda an old drawing, but oh well.

Purple Thumps

Hehehe, Leven Thumps from the Leven Thumps series thats going on. Its the last book I read so I'm just slightly in this whole Leven Thumps mood lately. I've also decided to try and do illustrations from some of the more recent books I've read, like Fablehaven and Leven Thumps. They've given me some wonderful ideas and I think I'll try and stick to a theme for them through out this semester.

Umm...I just got Corel Painter and I was playing with colors and brushes and stuff. This is what came out of it at first. Yes I know its a piece of junk, but I like the colors and the texture.

Illustration Friday: Super Hero

I've decided that I don't care much for Adobe Illustrator; it just doesn't allow me to have the style that I really like in my images. Oh well, this picture wasn't actually all that frustrating, I remembered some of the stuff I learned in class, but still don't like it much. We'll see how the next image goes.

The word was Super Hero and I just got done reading a book called Leven Thumps and the Whispered Secret. Very good book, it kinda gave me some of the idea for this image, or at least one of the characters did.

Illustration Friday Piece #1

Hello everyone!
The piece above is my contribution to IllustrationFriday.com. My digital illustration class here at college is doing a piece every week and posting it on Illustration Friday and on our Blogs.
The word for this week was 80's, so I did some research, tried to find some big things that happened in the 1980's because I decided that I didn't want to draw an old person, and I fould out that Indiana Jones was created in the 80's. I'm an Indiana Jones fan, so there we go!
The picture was completely done in Photoshop CS and with a Wacom. I've decided that if I'm going to be a digital artist I want to apply more of a painterly approach to my pieces, hence the reason why I haven't applied any filters or the likes. Straight brushes and some textured brushes and I'm happy right now.
